Shelby L. Jackson
Shelby L. Jackson, 81, succumbed to cancer after a brief illness Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Carmel Hills Care Center, Monterey.
A resident of Marina, he was born in Checotah, OK, on February 26, 1930, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947. A former P.O.W. from the Korean war and a veteran of service in Iran, Eastern Europe, and multiple Vietnam tours, Shelby Jackson was a highly decorated Command Sergeant Major upon his retirement from the Army in 1974.
Following his military service, Shelby devoted himself to volunteer work on behalf of the Marina community, the Food Bank of Monterey County, and various veterans' organizations. He was recognized in 2004 as the Volunteer of the Year by the Food Bank and by the City of Marina in 2007 as Senior of the Year. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marina Post 281, American Legion, Retired Enlisted Association, and Association of Sergeants Major.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his longtime companion, Blanche Smith; daughters, Judy DiMiceli (Mike), Paula Jackson, Suzy Reddy (Sammy), and Janis Costa; son, Frank Furtek (Sharon); seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial donations on behalf of Mr. Jackson be made to the American Cancer Society .
Arrangements for a private family service at a later date are being handled by Mission Mortuary.
