Benjamin Jackman, a native of New Hampshire, located in the town of Philadelphia in 1818, and was a, hotel-keeper there and elsewhere in Jefferson County 55 years. He had four sons and two daughters, two of whom are living, namely Abi S. (Mrs. Seth Strickland) in Mendon, Mich., and Daniel in Watertown. Abi S. Jackman daughter of Daniel was born in Champion, May 29, 1868, and when 16 years of age showed a decided talent for literature and wrote her first book, a Silver Ray. She has since written Evening Star, Golden Sunset, Fatima, a book of essays, and Dreams and Fancies of a Twilight Hour. Benjamin Jackman died in Watertown, September 4, 1889, aged 87 years.

1850 US Census: Benjamin Jackman, age 54 (b. NYS) and employed as a landlord, was heading a household in the Village of Antwerp, Antwerp Township, Jefferson County New York.  His real estate was valued at $5,000.  


The household also included his son,


1. Stephen P. Jackman, age 21 (b. NYS) and employed as a landlord;


  1. John Bolton, age 24 (b. NYS) and employed as a miller;
  2. H. D. Johnson, age 20 (b. NYS) and employed as a tailor;
  3. Andrew French, age 25 (b. NYS) and employed as a stage driver;
  4. Timothy Jackman, age 16 (b. NYS) and employed as a clerk;
  5. George Jackman, age 11 (b. NYS) and employed as a clerk;
  6. Daniel Jackman, age 7 (b. NYS) and employed as a clerk;
  7. Charles Robinson, age 22 (b. NYS) and employed as a Hostler;
  8. Sarah Jackman, age 40 (b. NYS); 
  9. Abi Drake, age 23 (b. NYS); Ida Jackman, age 2 (b. NYS);
  10. Margaret Farale, age 17 (b. NYS); and
  11. Elizabeth Swingston, age 20 (b. NYS).  


Of interest, there were also households headed by Ide Jackman and Sarah Jackman in Antwerp Township, and a George Jackman was heading a household in near-by Brownville Township.
