Death of Henry Iverson

The death of Henry Iverson, though not unexpected, was sad in the extreme and prostrated his family with a grief that excites the sympathy of the entire community. He was an only son. There had been another before but his promising young life too, was claimed by an all-wise Providence. All of a fathers pride and all of a mother's love was centered on the remaining son. He was loving and loveable. He was bright, intelligent, strong in mind and body, and full of promise. And when his parents thought of the son that had gone before, of the sorrow that had been buried, their hopes, their pride and their love centered on Henry and they were contented. It was his strength, his intelligence, his devotion to his parents, joined to a parents love and hope that makes his untimely death a tragedy, and which leaves a deepning sorrow, a blank woe that casts a shadow that only ends in the grave. Who can speak consolation that will echo though such a gloom? Truly, the ways of Providence are past finding out. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Antioch. The little mound of clay that pressed his lifeless form was banked with flowers and adorned with beautiful floral pieces, sweet emblems of purity and love. Thus was he followed to his last home and his grave bedecked by youthful companions and schoolmates, while friends of the family stood by with bowed head, in mute appreciation of a great grief and in testimony of their earnest sympathy for the family.

Note:

1) Death notice published Saturday, 1 July 1893 in The Weekly Ledger, page 2. An Antioch, California newspaper.

2) The only marker on the family plot is with surname spelled IVERSEN. However the cemetery records show 3 of the individuals interred here with the surname spelled IVERSON. Henry's death notice also spells his last name as IVERSON.
