MUNCIE--Dr. George W. Irving 83, passed away Sunday at Ball Memorial Hospital. He was born in New York City, New York, the son of Dr. George R. and Alda B. (Beecher) Irving.
Dr. Irving loved teaching, was passionate about theatre and animals, was a devoted caretaker for his late wife, June, and a loyal and loving father and husband. He was an avid reader, gourmet cook, gardener, artist and supporter for various animal care organizations. His trademark humor and good nature will be missed by many.
George attended the University of Delaware, New York University, and earned a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Michigan. Amid these college attendances, he served in the Medical Department, the United States Army as a Surgical Technician at the end of World War II and during the Korean War as a Special Services Soldier Show designer/director. He earned his Doctorate at Stanford University in Theatre Arts. George taught Public Speaking and Theatre for 40 years, 34 of which were at Ball State University.
His teaching posts included the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, State University of New York, Oneonta and Ball State University. He designed sets and directed plays for the Ball State Theatre, Ball State Summer Theatre, Muncie Civic Theatre and assorted student touring shows. As Managing Director of Ball State Theatre Groups, he was instrumental in the planning, financial and management procedures.
In 1983, George was awarded a Creative Teaching Grant to develop materials to be used in the teaching of set design, construction, lighting and costume.
His survivors include his children, Dr. Laurelyn Irving, Bakersfield, California, Guy B. Irving (wife-Kim), Carrollton, Texas, George B. Irving (wife-Melissa), Fort Worth, Texas, and Sherrill May (husband-Vance), Nobelsville, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Grayson, Kaitlyn, Meredith, Sydney, Ashely, Alec and Ian; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy Edwards, and his wife of 54 years, Dr. June Irving.
A Celebration of George's Life will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4800 W. Bradford Dr., Muncie, IN 47304, with Pastor Thomas Perchlik officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery.
Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, 415 E. Washington St., Muncie, IN 47305 or one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
