Enid Ireland Anderson, 82, Topeka, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, March 8, 2009 after a short illness.
She was born January 17, 1927 in Bonne Terre, MO, the daughter of Robert R. and Margaret Shoemaker Ireland.
She graduated from Salina High School and attended Kansas State University where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, and later Washburn University. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., where she met her future husband, Leland A. "Andy" Anderson. They were married on June 5, 1949 in Topeka and together they raised their family in Topeka.
Enid was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield and by Donald Hobbs, M.D. She was a Girl Scout troop leader, 4-H leader, and volunteered for many organizations throughout her life. Enid's passions included her family, reading, playing bridge, genealogy, and staying in touch with friends. She lived by her favorite phrase - carpe diem.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Anderson in 1996, her grandson, Dustin J. Jones in 1992, and a son-in-law, Jerry Jones in 1996.
Survivors include her children, Susan Winter (Mit), Patrick Anderson (Sharon), Kristen White (Bob), Sharon Jones, and Derrick Anderson (Juanita); grandchildren, Mit Winter IV (Hoddy), Sam Winter, Jennifer Kidd (Kurt), Laura Leinwetter (Lee), Adam Settle (Sofia), Daniel Kettle, Matthew Kettle, and Heather Rutschmann (Kyle); step-grandchildren, Julie, Joe, and Michael White; great-grandchildren, Mit Winter V, Anderson and Adrianna Leinwetter, and Devon Rutschmann; her brother, Dr. Robert Ireland, Jr. of Annandale, VA, many nieces and nephews, and her dog, Mia.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church.
Private inurnment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at a later date.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, Helping Hands Humane Society, or First Christian Church and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
