Betty Hisaye Shiba Nakamura Inouye
March 16, 1920 - Feb. 4, 2017
Salt Lake City, UT-Born March 16, 1920, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Unosuke Shiba and Shige Ishigaki. Betty was the oldest of eight siblings and one half-sibling. Married Karl Koji Nakamura on June 25, 1944, in Salt Lake City, who passed away on Feb. 1, 1990; married Yukus Yukiyoshi Inouye, November 16, 1996. He passed away on August 22, 2007.
Betty was raised and received her formal education in Japan; and was a member of the Nanka Shizuoka Kenjinkai.
She worked in gift wrapping and conducted ribbon and display workshops at ZCMI for more than 48 years.
An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Betty fulfilled many callings in the Dai Ichi Ward and Holladay 6th Ward in Salt Lake City. She also served three missions for the LDS Church: a regional mission in Salt Lake City; a single-sister missionary in the Tokyo Temple; and again served as a missionary in the Tokyo Temple with her husband Yukus Inouye.
She loved the arts. She was active in Shigin (ancient Japanese chanting) and taught the classical Japanese dance form, Gimbu (fan dance), and other traditional Japanese creative and performance arts to her children, grandchildren and members of her church and community.
Betty was a seamstress, knitter and crocheter. She not only sewed and knitted her daughters' wedding gowns, she sewed their friends' wedding gowns as well. Betty knitted countless afghans, shawls and sweaters for family and friends. She used her keen artistic eye to decorate her home with her award-winning oil paintings and beautiful ikebana flower arrangements.
At 57, she got her drivers license.
Betty is preceded in death by her husbands; sisters Sanaye Endow and Mitsuye Sawano, and brothers Ichiro, Kazuma and Kenji Shiba, half-sister Toku Shiba and an infant brother who died during childbirth.
She is survived by two daughters: Carol Nakamura Iwasaki, Salt Lake City; Jeannie Sayama (Dale), Bountiful and brothers Roy Yasuo Shiba and Paul Kunio Shiba, both from Los Angeles, and many nieces and nephews.
Six step-children: Ronald Inouye (Linda), Scarsdale, New York; Carolyn Mano (Ken), Pleasanton, California; Donna Cavanaugh (Keith), Draper, Utah, Gerry Yamashita (Paul), Newark, California; Jay Inouye (Karen) Herndon, Virginia; Vicki Maetani (Howard) Orem, Utah.
Four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 26 step-grandchildren and 50 step-great grandchildren.
The family extends deepest appreciation to Betty's loving caregivers, Steven Crown and Michael Olsen; and Gurvinder, Chelsie, Mike and Steve from Heartwood; and the staff at Life Care Center of Salt Lake City, Silverado, Alta ridge and Caresource.
Special thanks also to the Wilson and Vance families for their love, support and service to Mom.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Winder 9th Ward, 1495 E. 4705 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call prior to the services from noon to 12:45 p.m. A viewing will also be held Friday evening, 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
