Virginia Ijams Coleman, 83, a resident of Sherwood Forest since 1952, died of heart failure March 1 at her home after a lengthy illness.
Born in Baltimore, Mrs. Coleman graduated in 1935 from the University of Maryland and was a homemaker.
She was one of the founders of the Indian Creek School in Crownsville and remained a strong supporter. She also was a member of Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of the Colesville United Methodist Church in Silver Spring.
Mrs. Coleman was active in the Inner Wheel of Rotary International and the University of Maryland Alumni Association. She also was a life member of the Military Order of the World Wars.
Her husband, Tracy C. Coleman, died in 1996. Surviving are one son, Tracy C. Coleman, Jr. of Crownsville; one daughter, Anne C. Chambers of Sherwood Forest; and her grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church, Generals Highway, Millersville. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home in Gambrills. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coleman Memorial Fund, Indian Creek School, Evergreen Road, Crownsville, MD, 21032.
