Benjamin L. Hyser, Sr., 73, died at York Hospital on Friday morning, September 12, 2008. He was the husband of Shirley L. (Crone) Hyser. The couple observed their 52nd wedding anniversary on July 7, 2008.
Mr. Hyser was the owner of the Ben L. Hyser Wholesale Distributorship for 20 years. He then worked for 26 years as a contract hauler for the York Newspaper Co. Ben was a very well respected worker. He was a member of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church and a former member of the church council. Ben was an avid runner throughout his life. He was a loving husband and father and was known as the "thin" Santa Claus and was also called "Papa Smurf."
Born in Hellam Twp. on March 14, 1935, his parents were the late Benjamin T. and Martha (Dietz) Hyser, and his stepmother was the late Adelaide E. (Ibex) Hyser.
In addition to his wife, he leaves four sons, Benjamin L. Hyser, Jr., David E. Hyser, Daniel T. Hyser, and Jeffrey A. Hyser; two grandchildren, Casey and Justin Hyser; two brothers, Bradley T. Hyser and Ben T. Hyser, Jr.; six sisters, Betty L. Wentz, Brenda L. Wildasin, Bonnie L. Stauffer, Beverly L. Hagan, Barbara L. Hyser, and Beth L. Hyser; brother-inlaw, Ronald Crone; two sisters-in-law, Annette Gill and Marie Chronister; and many nieces and nephews.
Following cremation, there will be a graveside service at St. Jacob's Union Cemetery in York New Salem.
