MONTPELIER — Merlin Kearl Marland, 89, of Bennington, Idaho, passed away Saturday night, October 20, 2007, after a short illness. She died at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier, Idaho, surrounded by friends and family.
She was born February 23, 1918 at Laketown, Utah. She was the daughter of Morton and Caroline Moffat Kearl, the seventh child in a family of 12 children. Merlin grew up in Round Valley, Utah, on a sheep ranch. She attended school in Laketown, Utah, and graduated from North Rich High School in 1936.
Merlin married Harry Larraine Hunter on December 6, 1937, in Montpelier, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. Three sons and a daughter were born to this union. Harry passed away in August of 1960, and she married James L. (Bud) Hymas November 16, 1961. He passed away in November of 1967. On August 16, 1975, she married Joe S. Marland. He passed away in November of 1993.
During Merlin's lifetime she lived in Round Valley, Laketown, and Washington, Utah, Kemmerer, Wyoming, and Bennington, Idaho. She spent her life serving her family and others. Her hands were never idle. She always had a project she was working on. She had a great sense of humor and was a good sport about doing things her family would get into.
She enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, golfing, crocheting, traveling, fishing, being in the outdoors, rock hunting, and loved being with and doing things with her family.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and throughout her lifetime served in Primary, Young Women and Relief Society many times. She also did extraction work at the Family History Center. She was an active member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and served in several positions in this organization.
Merlin is survived by her three sons, William L. (June) Hunter, Morton K. (Ann) Hunter, and H. Brent (Carolan) Hunter, all of Bennington, Idaho; her daughter, Dianne (Ralph) Spotten of Laketown, Utah; 21 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 11 brothers and sisters, her husbands, one sonin-law (Harold Nebeker) and one granddaughter (Julie Hunter).
