Mary Alice Anderson, age 66 of Joplin, MO. passed away Friday August 27, 2010 at her home.
Mary was born on December 21, 1943 in Albuquerque, N.M. the daughter of Coyne and Luella (Cox) Hunt. She earned a Master's Degree in Gifted Education. She was a teacher of elementary gifted students and loved teaching children the wonders of science and to become critical thinkers. She devoted herself to her passion as a teacher for Joplin schools for 25 years. She was a member of the National Education Association and was a past president of the Joplin NEA and the first Golden Apple Award Winner in Joplin.

Mary also loved to sing and was a member of the teenagers Choir. She was always thinking of others and in past years was a Coalition for Compassion and Justice volunteer home-repair project coordinator, as well as a volunteer mentor to female first-generation college-bound teens. She loved camping, hiking and fishing but never went without her lipstick and earrings.

She married Galen McKinley in Joplin on November 2, 1960, and later married James Anderson. Mary was also preceded in death by her son, Kevin McKinley, M.D. and grandson, Fletcher Micklethwaite as well as James Anderson. She is survived by Christine Ashley Micklethwaite and her husband Stephen of Joplin, one sister; Doris Stevenson of Yorkville, IL., two brothers; Jack Hunt of Carlsbad, N.M. and Jim Hunt of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Brett Sokol, Thomas Latham and Jesses Latham; Kendal Micklethwaite, Ian Micklethwaite, Megan McKinley, Michael Mckinley and Erin McKinley, Allison Latham, Kaitlyn Sokol, Sunny Sokol; and many other relatives and friends.

Mary also enjoyed Camping in Arkansas, Square Dancing and playing Bridge with her very close friends of 40 years, "The Fredrick's" .
