ASHTABULA — Thelma Marie “Jane” Howe, age 89, died on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at Saybrook Landing where she had been a resident.
The much loved daughter of Otto and Helmi (Kauppinen) Huhta, she was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on August 7, 1925, and had remained a lifelong area resident.
Jane was a graduate of Ashtabula High School and also attended the Dyke and Spenserian School of Business. During W.W.II, she was employed by Federal Housing Authority; it was her task to find housing for those persons who worked at supply depots and aircraft factories.
On Nov. 23, 1946, she married her husband, Francis Xavier Howe, in Ashtabula. For fifty-five years, they were partners and loving companions until Francis’ death on July 17, 2001.
A life-long member of Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph’s Church; Jane was active in the Isabella Guild of the Knights of Columbus, where she received Woman of the Year Honors. She volunteered for Knights of Columbus Bingo and was very active at her children’s school, St. Joseph Elementary. Jane also enjoyed bowling and was a poll worker for many years.
A devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend; Jane will be remembered for her great faith, strength and duty to serve others, and her great love of friends and family. Her home was a place of welcome for everyone. She treated all who entered with respect and love.
Jane is survived by her loving children, Michael J. (Lisa) Howe of Conneaut, William F. (Mary Lou) Howe of Ashtabula, Elizabeth A. (Gary) Pandora of Columbus, Kathryn T. (Robert) Sharp of Harpersfield and Margaret M.( Bruce Braden) Dalton of Loudonville; grandchildren, Justin (Sharmane) Howe, Meghan (Doug) Lewis, Sarah Howe, Jennifer (Stephen) Foglio, Jessica Sharp, Neil (Danielle) Sharp, Betsy (fiancé, Ryan Pilewski) Pandora and Margie Pandora; four great-grandchildren, Thomas Howe, Ryan Sharp, Jacob Sharp and Kendall Lewis; brothers, Dr. James K. (Mary) Huhta of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Robert (Christine) Huhta of Erie, Pa., and Richard “Dick” Huhta of Georgia; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Jane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Francis X. Howe; their infant child; her brothers, Raymond Huhta and William Huhta; and her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 1st, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph’s Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio. The Rev. Ernesto Rodriguez will preside. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be observed from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31st, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula.
