DAVENPORT -- Services for Rudolf S. Hughes, of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park with military rites accorded by the Hughes-Canfield VFW Post 9128, Bettendorf. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mr. Hughes died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at his home. He retired in 1989 after working for 25 years as a tool and dye maker for Swan's Engineering Co., Bettendorf. Mr. Hughes was born Sept. 14, 1926, to Edward and Maria A. (Porscha) Hughes in Scott County. He married Patricia Kernan. He married Marilyn Gripp in 1970. She died in 1984. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Petrof Bay aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was awarded the Presidential Citation with Star. He was a member of the International Association of Tool Craftsman Local 1, and a lifetime member of Hughes-Canfield VFW Post 9128. Memorials may be made to the Hughes-Canfield VFW Post 9128 or Genesis Visiting Nurses Association Hospice. Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Dalee, Santa Barbara, Calif.; sons, Gary and Mark Hughes, both of Bettendorf; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. His brother, John, also served in the Navy during World War II. He was killed in action in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The VFW post in Bettendorf bears his name.
