Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Luella V. Hughes, 88, a resident of Davenport will be 10:30 am Monday, March 21, 2016 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1923 N. Fillmore Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 2:00 - 4:00 pm Sunday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. There will be an additional visitation Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 am at church.
Luella passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Davenport Lutheran Home after an extended illness.
Luella Viola Deppe was born July 26, 1927 in Bellevue, Iowa the daughter of Louis J. and Virginia T. (Gaspar) Deppe. She was united in marriage to Marvin Kieffer on August 12, 1947 in Bellevue, Iowa. Luella later married Willis “Bud” Hughes on August 1, 1958 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He died in 1997.
She retired in 1992 after 30 years at Marley Pump Company in Davenport; she was employed earlier for 9 years at Clinton Engine, Maquoketa, Iowa and G.M. Gibson, Bellevue, Iowa.
Luella was a longtime member of Holy Family Church and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
Luella was involved with and dedicated to her family always putting others needs first. She especially enjoyed her home, doing yardwork and growing flowers. Luella was very involved in genealogy, was a member of the Jackson County Historical Society and collected Depression Era glass.
Her best friends in later years were Marvin Kieffer, Dorothy Brady, and her four-legged friend Chloe-Belle.
Memorials may be made to Holy Family Church or for mass intentions.
Survivors include her son, Randy and his wife Debra Hughes; 5 grandchildren, Joshua (Crystal) Hughes, Jennifer Hughes, Chris (Brianna) Courbat, Andrew (Nancy) Courbat, and Jeff (Sara) Courbat, 12 great grandchildren, all of Davenport; a brother, Ardell (Lois) Deppe of Bellevue, Iowa.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three half-brothers, Lester, Francis “Frank”, Cletus Deppe; and three sisters-in-law, Marcella, Florence, and Frances Deppe.
Luella's family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers at the Davenport Lutheran Home, as well as, the hospice nurses for the compassionate care they provided their mother.
