"Gone to the mansions above at her home in Freedom on Wednesday, March 12, 1902, Sally Ann Norton Howlett, beloved wife of John Howlett, entered into rest at age 82. She was born in Barre, Orleans county, New York June 2 1820, the fourth in a family of ten born to Samuel Norton and Orpha Heath, his wife. In 1832 she came with her parents to Yorkshire and they moved to Freedom in 1840. She had an excellent education for those days, and taught school many terms. She was married to John Howlett May 25, 1842 and they have lived together in sunshine and shade for sixty years, lacking two months and thirteen days.
Three children were born to them, all of whom are living and were privileged to be with their beloved parents when the parting came. They are Louisa, now Mrs. George Waterman, Oliver S., of this town, and Enoch E of Freedom.
They have thirteen grandchildren and all were at the funeral but two, Charles Howlett who was abroad, and Mrs. Amy Waterman Parker who died last June and who was the only break in all these years in this family circle.
Almost the whole sixty years of their married life had been spent on the homestead farm which was settled by John Howlett's father, Enoch Howlett from New Hampshire in 1812.
Mrs. Howlett was greatly sought after by her neighbors in times of sickness on account of her gentle sympathy and efficiency as a nurse, and at her advanced age her counsel and help will be greatly missed. The funeral was at the home Saturday afternoon, March 15th. Rev. J. A. Sayles of East Aurora officiating, and preaching an excellent sermon full of sympathy and consolation for the aged husband whose declining years must of necessity be very lonely, and for the children who will listen in vain for mother's voice and the clasp of her gentle hand. Rev. Swartz, an intimate friend of the family assisted at the services.
For many years Mrs. Howlett had been a devoted member of the Universalist church, and a firm believer in God's mercy and loving kindness to all his children. Hence death held no terrors for her and the grave was robbed of it's victory. Like a trusting child, tired and glad to rest, she fell asleep, knowing that her life long companion would join her soon in the Holy City where together they would watch and wait for their children to come when God wills.
Among those attending the funeral from out of town were her only surviving brother Samuel Norton of Almond, who came a week before her death on hearing of her serious illness; Geo. R Waterman and wife of Addison, Mrs. Harvey June of Hornellsville, Daniel Howlett and wife, J. H. Howard, W. Frank Lewis, John Smith, wife and family, and Mesdames Sarah Lammie, Amelia Howard and Millie A Holmes of Arcade, John Phelps and wife of Delevan, Duane Lewis and friend and Carrie Byington of Centreville, Mrs. Samuel Marsh of Bliss and Lillie Metcalf of Pike."
