A native of Buena Vista, he was a Peninsula resident for the past 50 years. Mr. Howell retired from the Army at Ft. Eustis in 1960 with 22 years of service and retired from Civil Service as a Transportation School Instructor at Ft. Eustis in 1974 with 14 years of service. He was a long term active member of Olivet Christian Church.
A member of the 70th Tank Battalion during WWII, he participated in the Normandy Invasion, and served in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Northern France and Germany. He was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Arrow, European Theater Medal with seven Battle Stars, Presidential Citation, National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Louise Howell; his daughter, Mary Anne Woody and her husband, Don, of Hudsonville, Mich.; his four sons, Thomas Howell of Mobile, Ala., Ray Howell and his wife, Debra, of Haynesville, Va., Pat Howell and Andy Howell, both of Newport News; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at Olivet Christian Church by the Rev. Emmitt Murphy, former pastor. Interment will follow at Veterans Memorial Gardens in Hampton.
