Born in Lee County, Va., she had been a Peninsula resident for over 50 years, before recently moving to Michigan to be with her daughter.
Mrs. Howell was a longtime member of Olivet Christian Church and a member of the Ladies Aid. She also volunteered at the former Patrick Henry Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Watson E. Howell.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Woody and husband, Don of Hudsonville, Mich.; five sons, Thomas Howell of Mobile, Ala., Ray Howell and wife, Debra, Pat Howell, and Andy Howell, all of Newport News, and Robert McElyea and wife, Leona, of Indianapolis, Ind. She is also survived by four brothers, Ronnie McElyea, Tommy McElyea, and Jerry McElyea, all of Indianapolis, Ind., and Danny McElyea of St. Paul, Va.; one sister, Carolyn Eldridge, also of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at Olivet Christian Church by the Rev. Emmitt Murphy. Interment will follow in Veterans Memorial Gardens, Hampton. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
