William B. Howe of Boulder, Colorado, died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. He was 72.

Bill was born in Boulder on Christmas Day in 1935 to George Whitfield Howe, Sr. and Rubye Caroline Ahlberg. He grew up in Boulder attending Washington Elementary. His family moved to Longmont in 1945 where he graduated from Longmont High School in 1953. Bill attended the University of Denver before transferring to the University of Colorado where he majored in engineering. He then attended the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Texas. Upon returning to Colorado, he worked at area funeral homes before joining his father and uncle in 1965 at Howe Mortuary â Boulder. He would later purchase Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder. He sold the mortuary in 1991 and the cemetery in 1993.

On November 4, 1989, he married Amy Thurwachter in Boulder.

Active in the Colorado Funeral Directors Association, Bill served four years as Legislative Liaison for the association, and on the Colorado State Board for six years. He was Deputy Coroner in Boulder County for several years before being elected Coroner in 1972, an office that he held until 1984. He was President of the Coroner's Association in 1975. He was a member of the Boulder Elks Lodge #566, El Jebel Shrine of Denver, and was a 33rd Degree Mason. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of the Boulder Country Club and the Kona Country Club in Hawaii.

Preceding Bill in death are his parents; and three brothers, George W. Howe, Jr., Dr. John Howe, and Edward Howe.

Surviving are his wife, Amy of Boulder; a son, Brian Howe of Thornton; two daughters, Cindi Scherman and her husband, David, of Grand Junction, and Gina Simmons and her husband, Chaz, of Anchorage, Alaska; four grandchildren, Tarin Janson, Amie, Ben and Joe Raniewitz; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2008, at Howe Mortuary Chapel, Longmont. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private interment will follow at Green Mountain Cemetery, Boulder.
