Archie Thomas Horton, 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away at home, in the loving presence of his wife.
Archie was born in Lake Chelan, Washington, and had lived north of Tiger, Washington, and in the Tri-Cities, before attending school at Cheney, where he met the love of his life, Bea Drury.
They married in Grand Coulee in 1940. (November 2 would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.)
World War II started, and they moved to the Seattle area, and Archie worked at Boeing. He felt he needed to volunteer in 1943 for the Army Air Force, where he served until February 1946. After the war, they moved to Pullman where they built a house, and he graduated from WSU in 1950.
They moved to the west side, and Archie retired after more than 30 years at Boeing. They lived in Shorewood in Burien from 1958 until 2007, and were active members of St. Paul's of Shorewood Lutheran Church until health restricted attending. Archie always was open to help anyone for the asking.
Archie had many hobbies. He was a Scout Master at St Paul's in the 1960s. He was a bridge player, mushroom hunter, rock collector, gold miner, and stamp and coin collector. He loved hunting, fishing, backpacking, even doing backpacking into his 70s in the North Cascades. He was able to pass on some of the skills of his hobbies and his knowledge to his sons and others that wanted to learn.
Archie was the second of six children born to Thomas and Charlotte Horton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Daisy Stewart, and brothers, George, Myrton, and Maxwell Horton.
He will be greatly missed by his one remaining brother, Jim Horton, of Waterville, Washington, and Archie's wife, Bea Horton, their two sons, David Horton (Gaylynne) Lynnwood, Doug Horton (Teri) Mount Vernon, and six grandchildren: Michael, David, Melissa, Matthew, Lisa, and Katie.
There will be no service upon Archie's wishes. His remains will be inurned at Hawthorne Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, WA in the Veterans Section.
