A former resident of Plattsburg, she had resided in King City since June 1, 2006.
She is survived by her husband, John D. "Jack" Armstrong, to whom she married Aug. 30, 1941, in the Louisville Prebyterian Seminary; two sons, David M. Armstrong, Ph.D., of Loveland, Colo., and Thomas F. Armstrong, Ph.D. of Alexandria, La.; and daughter, Nancy A. McMillan, M.S. of King City.
She was preceded in death by her first son, James Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D., who died in 1979. Her family includes nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Dr.and Mrs. Emmit Field Hornie. She graduated from DePauw University, Greencastle, In., in 1941, where she had been active in women's athletics, basketball, softball, and swimming, later earning teaching certification from the University of Northern Colorado.
She taught elementary grade in Colorado and New Jersey and operated a pre-school in Missouri in the 1970's. She was a member of the Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at DePauw, a member of Mortar Board and a member of the American Youth Foundation.
No memorial service was held. She chose to donate her body to the University of Kansas Medical School.
