Born to James Edwin and Ida Bell Shade Horan, she married Theodore Pifer. She later married Bert S. Allen.

Surviving are four sons, Russell (Joyce) Pifer, William (Beverly Smith) Allen, Edward (Barbara) Allen and Frederick (Frances) Allen; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild and one brother.

She worked as a cook at Remmert Nursing Home in Roanoke and St. Vincent Nursing Home in Freeport.
