MEMPHIS COUPLE DIE IN GEORGIA PLANE CRASH
The Commercial Appeal) - July 17, 1992

A husband and wife who founded a successful Memphis children's clothing company were killed Wednesday night in a plane crash during a thunderstorm in east-central Georgia.

Cindy Holt Harris, 40, the niece of Mississippi Gov. Kirk Fordice, was the only passenger in the twin-engine plane piloted by her husband, John C. Harris, 41. The plane may have been struck by lightning before it crashed near Greenville, Ga., about 5:40 p.m. Memphis time, said Sheriff Dan Branch of Meriwether County, Ga.

The Harrises apparently were killed instantly, Branch said. Family members said the Harrises were flying to St. Simons Island, Ga., for a vacation on nearby Sea Island. The couple, who lived in East Memphis with their three children, had been married 20 years.

The Harrises were the owners and founders of Monday's Child, a decade-old children's clothing company that employs about 70 people in a 22,000-square- foot facility at 2896 Cargo Circle.

The company manufactures traditional and classic-style clothing from original designs, many by Mrs. Harris. Its major clients include department stores belonging to the Dillard's, Rich's and Parisian chains.

Branch said the weather near Greenville at the time of the accident included ''bad rain and bad lightning.'' He said a witness reported that ''some of the tail section and part of the wing broke off, and the plane started spinning around and around before it went down in the edge of a pond.''

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the crash site Thursday to determine the cause of the accident. A report probably will be issued in a couple of weeks, officials said.

Mr. Harris, formerly of Clarendon, Ark., was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Mrs. Harris, formerly of Pine Bluff, Ark., also attended the University of Arkansas. She was a member of the Junior League of Memphis.

The Harrises were members of Christ United Methodist Church.

They leave two daughters, Lauren Aileen Harris, 12, and Lacy Ann Harris, 7, and a son, Patrick Jay Harris, 10.

Mrs. Harris also leaves her parents, William and Grace Fordice Holt of Pine Bluff; a sister, Mrs. Susan McClendon of Monticello, Ark.; a brother, William M. Holt Jr. of Memphis; and her grandmothers, Irene England Holt and Aileen Fordice, both of Memphis.

Grace Holt is the sister of Fordice, the Mississippi governor. Family members said Fordice planned to return to the Mid-South from a trip in Colorado after hearing the news.

Mr. Harris also leaves his mother, Gloria Murphy of Perth, Australia; two brothers, Terry Harris of Russellville, Ark., and Robert Harris of Puna, India; and a grandmother, Ruth M. Smith of Toledo, Ohio.

Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel has charge. Arrangements were incomplete.
