BELTZ, Gertrude E. Holmes, 83, formerly of South Broadway Street, Wheeling Island, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital and Geriatric Center in Wheeling where she had resided since November 2001. She was born in Wheeling Aug. 24, 1921, the third daughter of the late Charles R. and Gertrude Becker Holmes. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Michael Parish, Wheeling and its Christian Mothers organization and was a former member of the Island Senior Citizens, Island Garden Club and Blessed Trinity Parish and its Women's Guild. Over the years, through her parishes and as a private individual, she was active in many Christian ministries, including the prayer network and adoration ministries at St. Michael's, cleaning the church rectory at Blessed Trinity, serving as a principal caregiver for her invalid father-in-law for 17 years and making dozens of bowls of potato salad, hundreds of cakes and cupcakes and thousands of cookies for parish, school and diocesan functions as well as weddings, Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, ordinations, graduations and funeral wakes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam F. Beltz III, on Jan. 26, 1982; they had married on Thanksgiving day Nov. 22, 1945.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death in March 1945 by her younger brother, Charles R. Holmes Jr., who was killed in action in Germany during the final weeks of World War II; her sisters, Dorothy M. Worls and Adelaide W. Kuntz; her brothers-in-law, Bernard L. Kuntz, J. Barrett Beltz and Jack V. Barry; and her sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann Barry and Helen Beltz.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret Ann Beltz of Wheeling; two nieces and their husbands, Connie Kuntz Paree and Rocco J. Paree of Wheeling and Elsie Worls Domingo and Baldwin Domingo of Dover, N.H.; a nephew and his wife, Charles B. "Mick" Worls and Barbara B. Worls of Westerville, Ohio; two great-nieces, seven great-nephews and their spouses; two great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews; four godchildren and numerous cousins.
