Hazel Holmes Barnes, 89, a Homemaker, died 17, December, 2007 at Marion General Hospital, Columbia, Mississippi.

Visitation is December 21, 2007, 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Columbia, Mississippi. Funeral services are 1:00 p.m. December 21, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Columbia, Mississippi with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Columbia, Mississippi. Hathorn Funeral Home in Columbia, Mississippi is handling the arrangements.

Mrs. Barnes was born August 12, 1918 in Tylertown, Mississippi to Marcus Lafayette and Myrtie Lee Holmes. She married the late William Benjamin Barnes, Jr., in 1937. After a few years in Houston, Texas the couple settled in Mr. Barnes' hometown of Columbia. As a mother, Mrs. Barnes was a Brownie Scout Leader and Director of Girl's Auxilary at First Baptist Church and an active volunteer in numerous school activities.

In the early 1950's, Mrs. Barnes became interested in flower arranging and landscape design. She pursued that interest with great enthusiasm, achieving status as a National Accredited Appraiser of Landscape Design Consultant. During her lifetime she won numerous design awards and judged flower shows in the Southeast and abroad.

She was a member and past president of the Mississippi Flower Show Judges Council and the Mississipp Landscape Design Critics Council. She was also a Life Member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs of Mississippi. She served on the Board of Directors of the Garden Clubs of Mississippi and as State Roadside Chairman in the implementation of the National Beautification Act of 1965.

In 2000 she received the Garden Clubs of Mississippi's Silver Trophy award for her contribution to the field of garden club work of state and or national significance.

Mrs. Barnes worked tirelessly toward the beautification of public and private facilities in Columbia and surrounding areas. She served as a member of the City of Columbia Planning Commission for 32 years. In 1983, the Junior Auxiliary recognized her as Outstanding Citizen at the Twelfth Annual Charity Ball. The Marion County Heart Association honored her in 1996 for her outstanding contributions in her most loving way to Marion County.

She chaired the grounds committee at First Baptist Church for a number of years, and was a member of Pine Needle Garden Club, the Town Club and the Pleiades Club. Member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, Mississippi.

Survivors include: daughter; Anna Marie Barnes of Jackson, Mississippi; brother; Marcus Lafayette Barnes of Tylertown, Mississippi, a number of nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
