Son of Harrison and Parmelia Holland. He married Eliza M. Lane on March 13, 1869. They had 10 children. After her death, he married Emma Sidfrids on Oct 26, 1902. He was saved when he was 18 years old at the New Hope Baptist Church near Thackeray and was baptized by Eld. Calvin Allen. He then left to start the New Liberty Baptist Church [Name changed to Smith Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in 1901] where he was ordained to the ministry on the 4th Sunday in April of 1894. His funeral was held at Smith Chapel Church with John Bailey Maulding officiating. He was buried near his wife and parents at the Holland section of Blooming Grove Cemetery.
Smith Chapel Church was closed & auctioned in October 2003. There were only 4 members remaining at the time of closure
