Lena L. Holifield
Lena L. Holifield, 99, of the Glade community, died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011 at her home.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Tuckers' Crossing Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the church prior to the funeral, from 12:30-2 p.m.
Mrs. Holifield was born near Huntsville, Ala. on May 29, 1912, the daughter of George W. and Fannie Rogers Looney. She was a member of Tucker's Crossing Baptist Church, where she was active in her Sunday school class and WMU as long as her health permitted. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ledru Hankins, Jessie Blakeney and C. R. "Red" Holifield, to whom she was married for 62 years; sons Carey Holifield, Toby Hankins and Ronald Holifield; a daughter, JoAnn Blakeney; a grandson, Eric Holifield; and a great-grandson, Heath Hankins; a stepson, Edwin Blakeney; and siblings Leona King, Rosie Strickland, Effie Hankins, Betty Emmons, Nancy Pittman, Noonon Looney, Dick Looney and Pete Looney.
Mrs. Holifield is survived by four children, Gail Diederich (Donald) of Fairhope, Ala., Gerald Holifield (Pansey) of Enterprise, Ala., Kenney Holifield (Kathy) of Laurel and Maria Johnson (Brennon) of Jesup, Ga.; two daughters-in-law, Frankie Hankins of Bridge City, Texas, and Patsy Holifield of Fairhope, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Donald Hankins, Melanie Buckley, Reggie Holifield (Robin), Mikell Holifield, Rhydonna Moseley (Bryan), Shane Hankins (Candice), Kent Holifield (Laurie), Charley Johnson (Amber), Karen Fitzgerald (Marshall) and Abbie Scarborough (Brian); 18 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; a sister, Annie Holifield of Laurel; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family expressed appreciation to the caregivers who devoted themselves to Mrs. Holifield's comfort during her last months — Marilyn Oliver, Mary Carmichael, Jackie Alridge, Erma Dennis and Catrina Hare.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering at Tucker's Crossing Baptist Church or another favorite charity.
