Dorothy Luella Bittler was born February 11, 1916, in New Avon Township, Redwood County, the daughter of Albert and Bertha (Beckman) Hoffmann. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Willow Lake Township. Following her mother's death, Dorothy lived with her godparents Ted and Lena Hoffmann. She moved to Sanborn after her father's marriage to Elsie Heise and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1934. Dorothy was united in marriage to Harry Bittler on June 4, 1936, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn. She worked at St. John Lutheran Home for 10 years before joining her family at Bittler's Building Supply. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Mary Martha Circle, and WELCA. Dorothy was also a member of Senior Citizens, served as president, and was honored with the Brown County Senior Citizen Distinguished Service Award in 1996. She was a member of the Extension Club, the Springfield Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary and St. John Lutheran Home Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, reading, playing cards and bingo, and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Dorothy Bittler died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Home at the age of 94 years.
She is survived by son David (Darla Knutson) Bittler of Springfield; daughter Barbara (Duane) Pingeon of Windom; 6 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters- Mable Bloemke of Springfield, Elaine Hedman of Storden, and Delna (Arvid) Redman of Sanborn; and sister-in-law Agatha Hoffmann of Lamberton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harry in 1998; son Richard in 1951; sisters- Vineta Wiese and Arliss Hoffmann; brother Melford Hoffmann; brothers-in-law Lloyd Hedman, and Edward C. Bittler; sisters-in-law- Hertha Nielson, Lillian Sondergaard, Lucille Sandbo, and Norma Kepler; and nephew Edward Bittler.
