*** Specialist, Fourth Class Hoeffs was a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On November 28, 1966, he was swimming with friends about 10 miles north of Tuy Hoa, Phy Ten Province South Vietnam when a large wave swept him out to sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

Their first son, Russell, was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin in Nov. 24, 1944. They moved back to Arizona shortly afterwards,
Their second son, SP4 John Harvey Hoeffs, was born 25 Feb 1946 in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Two more sons, Jim and Jerry, followed. All four of the Hoeffs sons grew up in Oceanside, San Diego county, California and graduated from Oceanside High School.
He has NO children.
* Paternal Grandparents: GrandParents, Grandfather, Benjamin Friedrich Hoeffs 1893-1978, FAG #107582585 and Grandmother, Margaret Mary Ehlinger 1895-1994, FAG #. and their Baby son, James A. Hoeffs, Born Sept. 11, 1914 and Died Sept. 20, 1914. All buried in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Suring, Wisconsin.
***** Mrs. Hoeffs, the former Miss Jacque Whaley. was ' married in Florence, several weeks ago, to Pvt. Harry Hoeffs, of the U. S. Army Corps, who was at the time stationed at Marana Air Base. Since the marriage Private Hoeffs has been transferred to an eastern coast station, and his bride has been making her home with her husband's parents, in Green Bay. The bride, who had completed sufficient credits in the Casa Grande High School to receive her diploma, was one of the members of the Casa Grande High, class of '44, which graduated here last night. Her diploma was awarded by proxy.
***** Awarded the Soldier's Medal for his efforts to save comrades who were swept out to sea. This is the highest award for Valor in the Army not involving Combat. May his sacrifice not be forgotten.

While serving with Aco. near Tuy Hoa South Vietnam we were taking a rest. While swimming in the South China Sea a member of the company got into trouble. John being a life guard from Ca. swam out to this person and brought him in to where someone else could help. Being worn out from this John tried to rest all the while being pulled further out to sea.
We looked for him with choppers,and boats but never found him. He was a very brave man to give his life for another and he will never be forgotten by the men he served with.
To give his life for another as he did is the highest standard a person like John could ever do .
We will always remember and never forget you. We hold reunions every 2 years just to remember our friends and brothers whom we love and miss so much. Being a soldier who served with John it's hard for people to understand how much we mean to each other.
We went to Fort Lewis together for Basic ,we lived together and trained hard together for 7 months and then left for Vietnam. Seeing as how a unit trained together for a period of time and shipped out together you really are a family. To lose a member hurts us all. John may have died an accidental death in a war zone but he is a HERO to us all.

All the individuals were able to get back to shore except for SP4 Hoeffs.
A helicopter was used to search off shore and along the shoreline for him, but he was never found, nor were any remains recovered.
Hoeffs' is one of the unfortunate accidental deaths that occur wherever people are.
He is listed among the missing with honor, because his body was never found to be returned to the country he served.
