The passing of Mrs. O.F. Gould, whose funeral was held Tuesdady, brought genuine, all-pervading sorrow to scores of people in this community. No woman in the long history of Greenwood County, ever served with greater influence or with more abiding helpfulness. She was first in every good cause in home, in church, in community affairs.
Her eyes behold many wonders. As a young girl and young matron, she saw the unfolding of Kansas from its strictly pioneer condition into a modern state of prime achievement. Her strong and active mind was alert to the changes that went on about her generation, and all her understanding and high intellect was based upon a queenly character that found its expression in kindly acts of daily life and ministrations to family and friends.
Emma Elizabeth Hodgson, daughter of Jonathan and Eliza Hodgson was born March 30th,, 1859, in the County of Victoria, Province of Ontario, Canada, and passed away at her home in Eureka, Kansas, on July 18th., 1942.
In the spring of 1869 she moved with her parents, brothers and sisters, to Eureka, Kansnas, then a little hamlet. In the fall of 1870 the family moved to Otter Creek twonship, where she grew to womanhood. Shortly after coming to Kansas she united with the Congregational Church and was a faithful member for about seventy years. Between the years of sixteen and twenty she taught in the Greenwood county schools.
On February 5th, 1880, she was united in marriage to Oren Franklin Gould. To this union were born four children; Leslie and Viven, Eureka, Kansas; Earle, Reece, Kansas, and Mrs. Julia Gould Lyng, Spokane, Washington.
The family lived on a farm in Otter Creek twonship until 1903 when they moved to Eureka, Kansas, Mr. Gould passed away May 11, 1924
There are six children of the next generation, two daughters of Mrs. Lyng, three sons and one daughter of Earle W. Gould. Of the large family of eleven brothers and sisters, one brother survives, William F. Hodgson, Eureka, Kansas.
Funeral service was held from the Baird Funeral Home, Eureka, July 21, 1942, Rev. S. Duane Ogden officiating. Two solos were sung by Mrs. Howard Mentzer, accompanied by Mrs. C.C. Bailey. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
