Birth: Jul. 7, 1884
Death: Jul. 30, 1931

The remains of Mrs. Birdie Hitchcock who passed away in Lincoln last Thursday were brought to Sterling Sunday and laid to rest in the Sterling Cemetery. Short services were held at one o'clock in Lincoln at the Castle Roper and Matthews Mortuary with Rev. Walter Altken officiating. Services at the Sterling cemetery were conducted by the Sterling Chapter O.E.S. with Rev. Lenker of the local M.E. church assisting. A large number of friends and relatives from Lincoln came down for the final rites which were also attended by a large number of former friends from Sterling and Tecumseh. A profusion of flowers expressed in mute silence the respect held for the deceased. Mrs. Hitchcock had a loving and kind disposition tender in the care of her family in which she took a great pride always looking out for their interests and welfare. She had been in poor health and as the ravages of a malignant cancer caused intense suffering, she bore her cross in silence, never complaining of her unbearable suffering. She will be missed by those who loved her and it is to them the sincerest sympathy is extended in their dark hour. Birdie Evelyn Barger was born at Sterling, Nebraska, July 7, 1884 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Barger, and died at her home in Lincoln July 30, 1931. She moved to DeWitt, Nebraska with her parents where she completed her high school education. She studied music and education at Peru and Fremont, and taught in the DeWitt schools for three years. She was an accomplished musician. She married W.F. Hitchcock of Sterling, Nebraska on May 22, 1907. At an early age, she joined the Methodist church of DeWitt and later transferred her membership to the Sterling Methodist church, where it has since remained. She was a member of the Sterling chapter of O.E.S. and rose to matron of that chapter. She moved with her family to Lincoln from Sterling eight years ago, where she has since resided. She belonged to the Lincoln Womans Club and Past Matrons Club. Beside her husband, she leaves three daughters, Ruth K., Lucille E., and Lorraine J.; two sons, Raymond P. and Richard E., her mother ,Mrs. J.R. Barger of DeWitt, Nebraska.
