George, a native of Ohio, was the son of Martha and Jacob Hillyard. The family moved to Indiana and eventually located in Henry County, Iowa. He married Phoebe Jane Tallman in 1859.

When the Civil War broke out, George was a resident of Henry County when he enlisted as a Private at Burlington, Iowa, on 22 Aug 1862 at the age of 30. He mustered in Co D 25th Iowa Infantry on 12 Sep 1862. George died of disease on 8 Mar 1863 at St. Louis, Missouri.

Phoebe married Asa S Turner in 1863. They lived in Page County, Iowa and had nine known children. Phoebe died in 1917 in Cloud County, Kansas at age 76.
