BENNINGTON Mrs. Ellen H. Barnard, 84, resident of Garbrooke Drive, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family and pets following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Plymouth, N.H. on Sept. 6, 1925, daughter of Melvin and Isabel Derby Hibbard, she attended schools in Bradford and Brandon, graduating in 1944. She then attended Rutland Hospital School of Nursing in the three year Registered Nurse Program.

In 1948 she married Reginald A. Barnard and began to raise her children in Brandon. She had worked as an operating room nurse in Rutland Hospital for 12 years. She then worked in the clinic at Brandon Training School for four years and upon relocating to Bennington in 1976, she worked at the former Bennington Convalescent Center, retiring in 1997.

Ellen enjoyed reading, traveling, knitting, gardening, animals and especially the company of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed volunteering for all causes and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a member of The Second Congregational Church where she was very active. She coordinated the Annual Snowball Bazaar for 6 years and also coordinated the weekly Sunday night suppers for four years. She belonged to all the church fellowships, working on the Dinner Brunch, Pancake Breakfast and many other activities in the church.

She was a member of AARP where she was Chairman of the Apple Fest for six years, worked at the flu clinics and Red Cross Blood Drives.

Ellen leaves her son, daughters, sister, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ellen was predeceased by her husband, Reginald A. Barnard, in 1985, and son-in-law, Thomas E. Hayes Jr., in 2006.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A celebration of Ellen's life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church with Reverend Mary Lee Clark officiating. A memorial reception will follow the service in the church hall until 3:30 p.m. Private burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
