Richard L."Dick" Hetzel, age 82, of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, passed away on Monday evening, August 19, 2013 at the Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.
Richard was born on January 17, 1931 in Wyandot County, Ohio to Carl J. and Mildred V. (Smith) Hetzel, both of whom are deceased. He married Ruth A. Stoneburner on June 29, 1952 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky and she died on August 16, 2013.
Richard is survived by 4 children, Michael (Norma) Hetzel of Upper Sandusky, Michele (Henry) Teters of Bucyrus, Ohio, Kyle (Rita) Hetzel of Upper Sandusky and Kelly (David) Rowe of Upper Sandusky.
He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, Phillip (Hillary) Hetzel of Delaware, Ohio, Jason Hetzel of San Diego, California, Roger (Jessica) Hetzel, Curtis Teters and Connor Teters, all of Bucyrus, Melissa (Todd) Roszman of Upper Sandusky, Brandon (Valarie) Hetzel of Upper Sandusky, Derek (Roshelle) Rowe of Bucyrus and Allison (Andreas) Mueller of Sycamore. Along with 9 great grandchildren, Dominic and Jake Hetzel, Ryker Hetzel, Gage and Cole Roszman, Hunter Hetzel, Mallory and Jaclyn Rowe, and Aniela Mueller as well as a great-granddaughter by the Muellers, who is expected to arrive soon.
Dick is survived by 3 brothers, Tom (Sandy) Hetzel of Iberia, Ohio, Ed "Mike" (Hertha) Hetzel of Bucyrus, and Bradley (Susie) Hetzel of Ocala, Florida. Along with 5 sisters, Joan (Jim) Connolly of Galion, Ohio, Sally Rall of Upper Sandusky, Carol Redick of Mt. Gilead, Kathy (Jerry) Ruhl of Mt. Gilead, and Rachael (Darryl) Lanker of Ocala.
Dick was retired from the former Chief Dairy where he managed daily operations for over 27 years. He also was the owner and operator of Richard L. Hetzel & Sons Soft Water Delivery for 26 years. He drove a school bus for the Upper Sandusky School System for over 20 years and helped as a courier for Commercial Savings Bank.
He currently was serving his 3rd term as trustee for Crane Township in Wyandot County and had previously served on the Upper Sandusky City Council in the 60's and was a charter E.M.T. member of the Wyandot County EMS in 1974
He was a 1948 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and went on to serve our country in the US Army for three years. He served 14 months in Korea with the 70th Heavy Tank Battalion of the 1st Calvary Division and completing his military commitment as a Sergeant 1st Class.
Dick was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Upper Sandusky and also the following organizations, American Legion Post #225 in Upper Sandusky, and the Korean War Veterans Association.
For hobbies, Richard enjoyed playing cards, bingo and traveling the various states with Ruth, from Florida to Alaska, taking cruises, and their yearly trip to Mackinaw and then visiting the casinos up at the Soo. He also will be remembered for his love of pug dogs, especially Mickey, and for enjoying a good cold can of Coca Cola or a beer with a dash of salt at the New Riegel Cafe
Dick was a believer in working hard and providing for his family, which was evident in his life's various occupations. He also loved his country and believed in giving back which again can be seen in his public service not only in the past but his entire life.
Funeral services for Richard L. Hetzel will be held at 10:30AM Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky with the Rev. Joe Trester officiating. Burial will follow at Old Mission Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Upper Sandusky Color Guard.
Visitations will be held on Friday, August 23, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 5:00PM to 8:00PM at the Lucas-Batton Funeral Home in Upper Sandusky.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the following organizations: Wyandot County EMS, the Flag City Honor Flight, which enables veterans to travel to Washington DC to see the memorials that were built and dedicated in their honor.
