Bessie Hepworth, daughter of George and Margaret Hays, was born April 13, 1896, at Lyndon, Kansas and passed away March 1, 1962, in a Topeka hospital.
At an early age she joined the Methodist Church of which she was an active member and served so faithfully through all the years. She was also a faithful member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She received her education in the Lyndon schools and upon graduating taught in Lyndon, Silver Lake and Carbondale.
On May 28, 1927, she was united in marriage to Floyd T. Hepworth. They lived in Lyndon until April 1931 when they moved to Osage City to make their home.
To know Bessie was to love her and she will be greatly missed by a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Wallace Hays. She is survived by her husband and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Fager, Milton, Oregon, and Mrs. Maud Coppinger, Winchester; also four nephews, Rodell and Delbert Coppinger, Winchester, and Ted and George Hays, Cupertino, Calif.; two nieces, Holeeta Hays of Bloomington, Illinois and Bonnie Dell Hayes, Leopoldville, Africa.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church of Osage City on Saturday March 3, 1962 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Paul Davis officiating. Interment was at the Osage City Cemetery. Ellis Swarts, accompanied by Miss Lola Johnson, sang "Sunrise" and "Nearer, Still Nearer."
Casket bearers were: Joe Tarro, Roy Haws, Clark Clover, Louis Bassett, H. L. Gamble and Charles McCall.
Relatives attending the services from out of town were; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bolton, St. Joseph, MO.; Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Coppinger, Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Coppinger and family, all of Winchester. Holeeta Hays, Bloomington, ILL.; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hepworth and family, and Ethelyn Fortescue of Topeka; Lynn and James Robison, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Robison, Nesoho Falls; Marion Bird, Wichita; and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hotchkiss and family, Perry.
Other out-of-town friends were; Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Tiffany, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Bahe, Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Boughton, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Phelps, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Rodgers, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Skidmore, Laura Carley, Mae Phelps, Gladys Watson, all of Lyndon; John Lincoln, Mary Hilding and Mrs. Mae Peterson of Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Goldsmith, Gilliard Montgomery, Burlingame; Mrs. John Sheall, Mr. and Mrs.Walter Webrie, Scranton; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meyer, Lawrence and Mrs. H. L. Simmons, Manhattan.
