David Hensal Found Dead In The Woods
Well Known Resident of Madera Overcome by the Heat

David C. Hensal, one of the best known citizens of Clearfield county, was found dead in the woods about a mile from his home at Madera. On Saturday, July 11, Mr. Hensal left his home in Madera to walk to the farm of his son, Sherman, a short distance from town. It was a warm day, and presumably to escape the rays of the sun, he took a by path through some woodland. Not returning in the evening, as he had promised, inquiry was made and it was found he had not reached his son's home. Fears were entertained at once, that something serious had happened to him, and an investigation as to his whereabouts was started. The whole community became aroused and searching parties were sent out in every direction, but without finding any trace of the missing man. Thursday afternoon about 2 o'clock while looking for his cattle, a farmer found the dead body of Mr. Hensal on a little green patch under a big tree. The body showed such signs of decomposition as to indicate that he had died on Saturday. Not being very well for some time past it is presumed he was overcome by heat and sat down under the tree and expired. It was found necessary to bury the body Thursday evening, interment taking place at Hegarty's X-Roads, and many person for miles around attended the funeral. The deceased was born in Cashtown, Adams county, and was aged 82 years on the 20th of March last. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hensal, were among the early settlers of Adams county, He came to Clearfield county at the age of about 20 years, settling near Madera, first following carpentering. Later he engaged in the lumbering and coal business having interests in Clearfield and Somerset counties. He is survived by five sons and two daughters, viz: George, of Pembina, North Dakota; Dr. Thomas, of Nowata, Oklahoma; John, Amos and Sherman, of Madera; Blanche, wife of Dr. Thomas Boyer, of Pittsburgh, and Cora, wife of J. O. Stanley of Philipsburg. Two brothers and one sister, residing in the west, also survive. (The Progress July 18, 1914)
