In 1906 he was commissioned a first lieutenant in Marysville's Co. E, 4th Ohio Infantry (Ohio National Guard). Rising through the ranks he served as a major commanding the Third Battalion in 1916 on the Mexican border. In August 1917 he graduated from the Army School of Musketry in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. By November the same year the Ohio 4th Infantry had been absorbed into the 166th Infantry, part of the famed Rainbow Division.
By the time he was mustered out in 1919 he had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and had been wounded in an eye and suffered a crushed ankle in combat. He was awarded the Silver Star medal, the Purple Heart, and a citation from General Pershing.
After the war he returned to Marysville where he helped rebuild and continued to serve with the Ohio National Guard. In 1920 was promoted to brigadier general; and commanded the 74th Infantry Brigade of the 37th Division until he retired in 1940.
He was appointed Ohio adjutant general; he served as chairman of the voluntary relief commission for Ohio from 1931 - 1935; he directed the Ohio Civil Works Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. In 1939 he was appointed warden of the Ohio Penitentiary.
