Obituary - Death came quietly in her sleep Tuesday morning to Mrs. Herbert F. Austin, Sr., while she was visiting her son, Theodore H. Austin, in Atlanta, Ga. Well known to many and loved by many, Mrs. Austin, who was 77 at the time of her death, had been making her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Milan Kana of Bellport, ever since her husband, a prominent and influential insurance man in Patchogue, died three years ago in Florida. Born in New Hyde Park, Mrs. Austin, the former, Miss Mabel Hegeman, had lived in Bellport and Patchogue for 55 years. She led an active life, not only in the raising of her family but in her participation in various civic projects, the dearest to her being her work both during World War I and World War II in the Red Cross. It was during the latter war that she served in the most important post of chairman of production, in charge, in Patchogue's Red Cross Work Room, of the making of garments that went out to refugees all over the world. Other civic interests of hers were the Patchogue Sorosis, the Patchogue Parent-Teacher Association and the Women's Society of the Congregational Church, in which she had also been a past president. Surviving are her three sons, Herbert F. Jr., of Boise, Idaho, Theodore H., of Atlanta, Ga., and Jere C., of Patchogue; her daughter, Nancy (Mrs. Kana), of Bellport; a sister, Miss Sarah Elizabeth Hegeman, of Sea Cliff and 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today by the Rev. Elwyn B. Chaney, pastor of the Congregational Church, at her Bellport residence, followed by interment in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Patchogue. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Ruland Sons, Patchogue. The family request that flowers be omitted.
