General Head began his military career with the Illinois National Guard in 1897 and was mustered into federal service in April of 1898. He saw action in the Spanish American War and remained with the Illinois National Guard as a young cavalry officer until 1904. Head moved to California for a period and continued his military service there with the California National Guard before coming to Oklahoma in August of 1918.

General Head had advanced to the rank of Colonel by 1925 and was serving as commanding officer of the 180th Infantry Regiment, which was headquartered in Muskogee, Oklahoma. In 1936 he was promoted to Brigadier General commanding the 90th Infantry Brigade of the Oklahoma National Guard.

It was in Muskogee that Head made his home and worked as a merchant. Head was actively involved in Freemasonry in Muskogee as well. By 1941 he was a Past Commander of Muskogee Commandery No. 2 and was serving as a Field Drill Judge. He held a position on the Grand Commandery's Work and Tactics Committee until 1953. Head was also active in the Bedouin Shrine of Muskogee and held the position of Commandant.
