Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1842 and was assigned to frontier duty. During the Mexican War, he served in the Seventh Infantry. He was commanding officer of the 37th New York Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. In March of 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General of volunteers for gallantry at Fair Oaks. In 1865 to 1866 he was acting assistant provost marshal-general and disbursing officer at Elmira, New York. He took command at Fort Dakota in 1866 and was retired in 1872.
