From the Nebraska City News, dated November 23, 1917; Passed Century Mark, Blancit S. Hayden Dies At His Home In Missouri. He Was A Well Known Pioneer - Was Married Five Times and Successful In Business Affairs.
From Friday's Daily
A telegram was received here last evening announcing the death of Blancit S. Hayden, which occurred yesterday morning at the home of his son, John Hayden, at Hale, Mo., aged 101 years, 5 months and 26 days. For some time he has been feeble, almost helpless, and his death was due to old age.
Blancit S. Hayden was born in Mead county, Kentucky, April 22, 1816, one of a family of nineteen children. When he was 16 years of age, he began blacksmithing for himself, near Elizabethtown, Ky., and at the age of 20 he married, the bride being 15 years old. They began life in a cabin of one room. In 1848, he and his family started for Iowa, locating in Carroll county. Here his wife died, leaving five young children. Two years later, he married again and moved to Missouri. In 1865, he and his family, his sons-in-law, Jacob Harmon, and Samuel Schuster, came to Nebraska, Mr. Hayden purchasing three quarter sections of land near where Julian now is. After five years of farming he retired and came to this city, where he enjoyed life for many years.
Five times he was married. His first bride, the fifteen-year-old Kentucky girl shared the hardships of his young manhood, lived thirteen years and bore him five children. She died soon after they reached Iowa, which was thirteen years after their marriage. Her maiden name was Martha Ann Mathews. He married Mary Ann Woodring in Iowa in 1850 and she lived twenty years dying in Nebraska City. Then he married Lucinda Dakin, who died in 1890. Then at the age of 74 years, he married Rebecca Ann Childs in Kentucky, bringing her to his new home in Nebraska City. She lived eight years. His fifth wife was Mrs. Amanda Shupp.
Mr. Hayden was a strong man physically as well as mentally, and could accomplish more in one day than two could usually do. He was quite successful financially, and leaves quite an estate. He was gifted in a poetic sense and wrote many pieces that possessed merit. When young he became a member of the Baptist church, and was a very devout member, always occupying his pew when health would permit.
He is survived by two sons, J. B. Hayden of Lincoln, and John Hayden, of Hale, Mo., and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Schuster, of this city. Hon. D. T. Hayden and Mrs. Jacob Harmon passed away some years ago. He has many descendants.
The remains will arrive here in the morning on the Burlington, and the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at the Baptist church. The interment will be at Wyuka.
