1926 ~ 2013

Junior C. Hawkins, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 18, 2013. It was hard for dad to leave knowing that he would miss his family here, but he was excited to begin his new journey with mom, and the family and friends he had shared his life with here on earth.

He was born on May, 6, 1926 in Benjamin, Utah. He was the first child of Ivan and Edith Simmons Hawkins. His little sister Lois, who he dearly loved, arrived two years later. Being the only children in the family, dad and Aunt Lois had a special bond with each other. He attended school in Benjamin and Spanish Fork, Utah. He enjoyed being on the senior council and playing football. Upon graduation from Spanish Fork High School, dad asked his sweetheart, Rowene Johnson, to marry him and on February 13, 1945, they were married for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple. At the time of mom's passing, they had been married 67 years.

Their honeymoon was short lived as dad was called to active service in the Navy in March of 1945. Upon completion of his basic training, he was shipped to Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific Ocean where he served until the end of World War II.

Upon his return from the war he found employment with Geneva Steel and worked there for 39 years until his retirement. At that same time, dad and mom also moved to Benjamin and lived out their lives on the farm.

He loved being outdoors and enjoyed the many years of hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, and friends. He enjoyed tinkering on the farm and loved to have horses hanging around. He also enjoyed BYU sports and spent many years with mom attending football and basketball games.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the opportunity to serve in many callings and strived to be a faithful home teacher. Together, dad and mom served in the church's extraction program for many years and they also enjoyed attending the temple.

Dad wasn't much for speaking to a crowd but relished in the opportunity to speak with people one on one. He took great interest in what others, especially his family, were doing and we appreciated his support. He loves his posterity and always wished the best for each one of them.

He is survived by his children Sheila (Ronald) Moss, Doug (Kaye), Blake (Kathryn), Lynn (Claudia) and Brian; 16 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; his sister, Lois Marie Wright, two sister-in laws, Vivian Carlsen, and Ruth Milner, and one brother-in-law, Francis "Spot" Milner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rowene Johnson Hawkins, and his parents, Ivan and Edith Hawkins.

With gratitude, we thank the community of Benjamin, and the many other friends that dad had, who took the time to call or look in on him. We are also grateful for the many medical persons who were so tender and skilled in their caring for dad that allowed him to be a part of our lives for these many years.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 23, from 6 to 8 pm at Walker Mortuary located at 187 South Main Street, Spanish Fork, Utah. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 24 at 11:00 am in the Benjamin LDS church located at 3278 W. 7300 S., Benjamin, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Benjamin Cemetery.
