He was homesick and returned to Denmark, but found that to have been a mistake, and returned to the U.S. again at the age of 19. He was employed in San Francisco and went to night school to learn English. He worked at the Spreckles sugar factory at Spreckles, and that is where he met Clara Belle Hatch, who worked at the Spreckles Hotel as a waitress. He was aged 35 and she 26 when they were married at her parents' home in Watsonville. His brother Matt was operating the 1,000 acre Deep Well Ranch located on the Old Stage Road, approximately 3-1/2 miles from Chualar in Monterey County. The brothers worked as partners for several years, raising barley, oats, beans, and other dry land farming. Clara cooked for the big crews at harvest time, and always fed several hired men throughout the year. The couple had their first daughter, Ellen Anna, in 1903, and their second, Anna Marie, in 1905. Jack became a U.S. citizen, taking great interest in politics. In 1917, Jack bought the family's first car, a seven-passenger Studebaker, and by 1920, due to the ill health of their two sons, John and Kenneth, the family doctor suggested they get out of the Salinas Valley so they moved to the Durham Colony. A 40-acre tract of land was purchased on "Park Boulevard and Esquon Road", with the adjoining 40-acre piece purchased by his boyhood friend from Denmark, Chris Skovmand.
