Sadie Harter Cooner — Bamberg

Sadie Harter Cooner, 104, of 2836 Railroad Ave., Bamberg, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at the Bamberg County Hospital. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Bamberg, with the Rev. Jim Dennis officiating. Burial will be in the South End Cemetery.

Mrs. Cooner was born in Allendale, Sept. 11, 1898, a daughter of the late Julia Platts and Willie E. Harter. She attended Fairfax School and Columbia College, graduating from there in 1919. She served as a Student College President. After graduation, she taught several years in Olar. In 1922, she married the late Roy E. Cooner and moved to Bamberg. Mr. Cooner died in 1965.

"Miss Sadie" played the organ at Trinity United Methodist Church for over 55 years. She loved to share her talent by playing the piano for many groups. She played at weddings, funerals and many programs. She was a member of the National Federation of Music Clubs and in her 99th year gave a concert to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the NFMC and she joined this group in 1922. She founded the Apollo Music Club in Bamberg serving as president for several years and secretary for "many, many years". She played for the Men's Bible Class at Trinity, and the Lions Club. She loved all types of music but Ragtime was her favorite. "Miss Sadie" loved people, enjoyed stories, jokes, and being with friends of which she had many of all ages. God created a unique loving person in "Miss Sadie". She was a small petite Southern Lady who was loved by everyone. She also served in the United Methodist Women Circles and took an active role there. She was a member of the Garden Age group and attended meetings right up to her death.

Two brothers preceded her in death, William H. Harter and J. Carlisle Harter.

Survivors include her niece, Anne Harter Wilson and her husband Jim; and a niece-in-law, Marian B. Harter, all of Salisbury, N.C.; three great-nephews, Steve, Mike and Rick Lentz; one great-niece, Julie L. Bingler; and many cousins.

Cooner Funeral Home in Bamberg is in charge of arrangements.
