ST. GEORGE -- Evelyn Selina Harrison Burgess returned to her Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 25, 2004, in St. George surrounded by her husband and children. Evelyn was born January 27, 1925, in St. George, UT, to Heber Eldredge and Lettie Mae Nelson Harrison. She was the youngest of ten children. She married J. Burton Burgess August 21, 1945, in Pioche, NV. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple.
Evelyn attended schools in New Castle, Payson, and Cedar City. She graduated from Cedar City High School.
Evelyn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Primary Teacher, Visiting Teacher, and Relief Society President.
Evelyn was a fantastic cook and put those skills to use in the many years she worked in and supervised the lunchroom at West Elementary in St. George, UT. It was her personal goal that not one of those children should be hungry. The teachers were the recipients of her special treats.
Evelyn was a wonderful support to her husband, Burt, branding and herding cattle, hauling hay, irrigating fields, and the many chores associated with a life of ranching.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Burton; children, Joanne (Wilford) Hafen, Kathy (Wes) Christiansen, Bruce Burgess, Kevin Burgess, Valynne Milne, and Craig Burgess; sister, Esther Taylor; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Connie; her parents; grandson, Adam; and brothers and sisters, Karl, Murray, Albert, Edith Collins, Richard, Ross, Melba Stewart, and Herbert.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Southern Utah Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at 11:00 a.m., at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George.
