Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st United States Regular Cavalry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Smithfield, Virginia on August 28, 1864. His citation reads “In an attack upon a largely superior force, his personal gallantry was so conspicuous as to inspire the men to extraordinary efforts, resulting in complete rout of the enemy”. His Medal was awarded to him on January 23, 1896. He served the rest of his career in the 1st US Cavalry, rising to Major of the regiment.
