Margaret was the daughter of Thomas Harkness and Eliza Gilmore Harkness. In 1854, she moved with her parents to Grand DeTour, Illinois, where she was married to Benjamin E. Hamilton in Ogle County on May 10, 1856. To this union they had four children. In 1873, The Hamiltons moved to Kansas and settled near Oakwood.
Grandma Hamilton, as she was lovingly called by her neighbors and friends, was a quiet, kind and cheerful hearted woman, always ready to extend a helping hand and to sympathize with those in need and distress. Her long illness and suffering was a proof of her great patience and deautiful disposition, and her memory will always be endeared to those who knew her.
The funeral was held at the Oakwood church Wednesday, conducted by Rev. W.E. Monbeek, pastor of the Blue Mound Baptist church, after which the remains were conveyed to the Oakwood cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives and laid to rest.
