Second wife of Pvt. Stephen Surden Arnold (1818-1887) whom she married in 1883 in Furnas County, Nebraska. Mary's first husband was Lewis Mathew (1818-1898) with whom she had at least nine children including: John H., Mary Jane, Harrison W., Parks, Minerva, Frank, Isadora and two other children who died as infants. Mary and Lewis Mathew were married on December 16, 1838 in Clinton County, Ohio. Mary was the daughter of Henry Hardesty and Sophia Lieffy (McFadden) Hardesty.

Death of Grandma Mathew
The sad news of the death of Mary Arnold at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. McFadden, of Lees Creek, Ohio, reached here yesterday. She will be remembered by many as Grandma Mathew. She with her two sons, Parks and Frank, came to this county in the fall of 1873, and took a homestead six miles east of town. In 1874 she had lumber hauled from Lowell and Kearney and built a frame house, which was the only one for years between Beaver City and Orleans. In the fall of 1874 her youngest son Frank, was married to Miss Fannie Mayo, the daughter of our late townsman. After this Mrs. Mathew never seemed to be quite contented and made several trips to Ohio and back, stopping in Iowa to see her sons there. In the spring of 1883 she was married to S. S. Arnold, who lived about four years. The past three years she has been with her daughter and has been helpless. She did not suffer or complain. The doctors claimed that she had no disease, but was just worn out. She was born March 12, 1815; died February 4, 1901, and was therefore 85 years, 10 months, 22 days of age. She was a member of the Christian church and was loved by all who knew her.
