John Bernal Harbell, 90, died October 17, 2008
of congestive heart failure after a long
decline,at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation
Center, Monteano, Washi.ngton. He was born
July 25, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., the
second son of Ruth (Nichols) and Carroll Owen
Harbell.
His father was a farm manager in the rural
San Diego, Los Angeles and central
California areas.
Eager to follow his older brother, John
started school a year early and graduated
Patterson High School at the age 16. He
earned a degree in Economics from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1939.
He met his future wife, Jeanne Collier, in
Los Angeles; and they were married in
Alhambra, Calif., December 22, 1941, just
after Pearl Harbor attack.
During World War II, they both worked for
Douglas aircraft in Los Angeles and Santa
Monica, then he was drafted for Army service
in France in 1944.
He was severely injured in the face, chest
and hands by an exploding mortar and
spent months recovering at Fort Vancouver,
Wash. His hands were reconstructed and he
had only three fingers on each hand, with
restricted usability, but this never
limited what he did.
After the war he earned a Ph. D. in
economics and finance from the University
of California at Berkeley, studying the
banking system of Lebanon.
The family spent three years in Lebanon,
where Dr Harbell was a professor at the
American University of Beirut. His
youngest son was born in Beirut (which
has lately caused him considerably
security difficulty with international
travel post 9-11). Dr. Harbell, with his
family, also served with the United
States Aid for International Development
Program in Amman, Jordan for two years
in the 1960s, and the two older boys
attended boarding school in Leysin
Switerland.
Dr. Harbell worked as a professor and
dean of the School of Business at San
Francisco State University for 30 years.
The Harbells raised three sons in Orinda,
Calif., living in the same house for 50
years. They celebrated 67 years of
marriage this year.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanne, of
Montesano, a sister; and sister-in-law;
three sons; four grandsons; two step-
granddaughters; one step-grand-grandson;
a cousin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service is
planned for 1:00 pm, November 1,
2008, at Oakmont Cemetery, Lafayette,
Calif.
