Bessie Augusta "Gussie" Hannah Crumbly, 96, passed away in Williamsburg, VA, on November 14, 2007.
Mrs. Crumbly was born on August 15, 1911, in Bradley County, TN, the daughter of the late Robert S. Hannah and Lucy Shields Hannah. She was married May 11,1930, to John H. Crumbly, who preceded her in death August 24, 1952. Two brothers, Lanion and Leonard Hannah, of Old Fort, TN, and one half-sister and one half-brother also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Clara Kovar Crumbly of Williamsburg; two grandsons, David Crumbly of Norfolk, VA, and Andrew Crumbly, and his wife Maria, of Lanexa, VA; three great-grandchildren, Alejandra, Sarah, and Timothy, also of Lanexa; two sisters-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was a member of North Broad Baptist Church of Rome, GA, before transferring her membership to the Williamsburg Baptist Church in 1992 when she moved to Chambrel at Williamsburg. She moved to Tandem Health Care in April 2005.
Mrs. Crumbly was employed by Dellinger Custom Carpet, Inc., in Rome, GA, from 1938 until she retired in 1976, after which she worked part time as a carpet design consultant for 13 more years. She held a number of positions with Dellinger Inc., including machine operator, designer, Head of the Design Department, and Operations Manager.
Gussie was a member of the Leona Clements Chapter, Porcelain Art Guild, in Rome and the Georgia World Organization of China Painters. Soon after moving to Williamsburg, she became an active volunteer in the Costume Design Department with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Volunteering after her 85th birthday, she was nominated for the Volunteer of the Year Award. In 1999, she was awarded the first Lifetime Volunteer Award by Colonial Williamsburg Foundation President Robert Wilburn.
The family received friends in Williamsburg from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 16th at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 17th, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the Williamsburg Baptist Church, 227 Richmond Road.
The family will receive friends in Rome, GA, from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20th, at Jennings Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, 1148 N. Broad Street NE. A graveside service and interment will follow at 3:15 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery in Rome with Dr. Tony Brooks officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews of Mrs. Crumbly.
