Susan L. Han, was born in Shenyang, China on February 22, 1917. She was very fortunate to have a forward and open minded Father who thought that girls also needed to have a good education. She attended Dong Bei University Xi Bei Gong Xue Yuan during the turbulent times of the Second World War.
Susan met her loving husband Thuo Fu Han while at the University. Both supported and took care of each other during the war. They married after the war and became partners in life as well as in their civil engineering careers.
China, after the end of World War II, was a country in need of infrastructure repairs. Together with her husband, Susan was assigned to repair the railroad system in the southern provinces of hang Zhou and Su Zhou. In 1948 they both continued their civil engineering work building the railroad system in Taiwan . In 1956, she and her three children joined her husband in the US to start a new chapter in her life. Together with her husband, she continued her civil engineering work at the Indiana State Highway Commission designing state and US highways including US 65, US 70, and the 465 loop. Striving to do her best, she obtained her professional engineering license; only the second woman in Indiana to receive such qualifications. She worked until the age of 70, retiring in 1987.
Devoted to her family, a loving wife and mother, a source of strength and support, Susan gave her whole life to her family. After the death of her husband in 1971, she continued to work full time. After retirement, she put her energy into caring for her children, Polly, Janice, and Sanford and helped raise her grandchildren, Thomas, Christina, Andrew and Nicholas. She also traveled around the world, giving her great pleasure and excitement. During her later years, she spent her spring and fall seasons tending her beautiful garden in Indiana and spent her summer and winter season in the warm climate of California.
A person of great faith in God, she practiced a true Christian life. She began and ended each day with prayers, thankful for all that the Lord provided. She reached out to give her friendship to her family, friends and community. With a positive attitude, she lived her full life with strength, courage, and love.
On a sunny day, November 25, 2006, she passed away peacefully from this earth to join her loving husband and her Lord.
