Larry Wayne Annis, 75, of Monon, died at 10:10 pm, Thursday, February 26, 2015 at IU Health Hospital in Lafayette after a long, difficult battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease, or ALS.
He was born May 7, 1939 in LaPaz, IN to the late Glen and Faye (Wingett) Annis. He was a 1957 graduate of LaPaz High School and received his Associate Degree from International Business College. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1961 – 1963. Larry met the love of his life, Peggy, and married her at her parent’s house in Argos, IN on October 11, 1962. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2014.
In 1963, following a Hardship Discharge from the Army, Larry and Peggy moved to Monon from Warehouse Point, CT. Due to his brother Dave’s extended illness, Larry returned to assist in running the family business, the Annis Foodliner. From that point on, Monon was his home. Upon Dave’s death in 1966, Larry and Peggy purchased the family business and in 1993 they purchased what is now the Annis Mini Mart.
Larry and Peggy had a passion for antiquing and traveling. Throughout the years, their travels took them to many destinations within the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and also many countries in Europe. Larry was an avid Purdue supporter, and they enjoyed attending football and basketball games (Boiler Up!). For over 30 years Larry and Peggy could be found at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Race Day.
Larry’s heart and soul was in serving the people of his community. He never met a stranger and was a very generous man. His passion in life was for his family, for Monon, and for the people of Monon. This was very evident in his involvement with several organizations. He was a member of the Monon United Methodist Church, the Monon Chamber of Commerce, and a life-long member of the Monon Lion’s Club. Larry was also a proud Republican, serving as an elected official on the Monon Township Advisory Board for over 30 years. It was also very important to Larry to support the various youth programs in the Monon and North White communities.
Larry’s greatest challenges began in the early 2000's. He began to struggle with various symptoms that eventually led doctors to a diagnosis of Lou Gehrig's Disease. Around the same time, his wife began showing symptoms of Dementia, which developed into Alzheimer's Disease. In 2003, Larry was forced to retire after losing his business to storm damage. As both Larry and Peggy’s conditions continued to deteriorate, Larry devoted himself to caring for Peggy, and could always be found by her side. When it became evident that Peggy would need advanced care, he made it his goal to be with her almost everyday while she was in the nursing home. This was not always an easy task, given his own increasing physical limitations. However, his devotion to Peggy never wavered, and his love for her was apparent to all who knew him. Larry and Peggy shared an enduring love that was able to carry them through to the end.
Larry was a very passionate man. He was known and loved by many. Larry was a man of integrity, highly respected both personally and professionally. He gave his life in service to others. Larry was a great example of a devoted husband, a proud and loving father and grandfather, and an ever faithful friend.
